Links Summary

What is the solution to child poverty in New Zealand?

Childhood poverty increases the risk of poor health, poor educational achievement, unemployment, teenage pregnancy, criminality and so on.
Addressing it would not only enrich the lives of the children concerned, it would reduce the money we're spending responding to those issues.

Tackling Child Poverty should be PRIORITY

A few examples to prioritize child poverty: teachers are some schools are spending money on food for hungry kids when that money should be spent in their education. If kids aren’t fed, they can’t learn. Student achievements. Poverty particularly in early life, has negative effects. Ignoring the problem is greater than solving the problem. Lets put the money up front and prevent this, kids leaving school early, getting a productive healthy society. The money is spent anyway, criminal and corrections system, diabetes (we need to spend it in the first 5 years of life). Some families are too poor to feed children. Lets use tax credit, family tax credit in poor younger kids. Money going from fathers but not going to children, government keeps it, it will help kids..we can help with under 2 dollars a day. Net cost per child is very low, but organising it is very difficult, teachers for example need to concentrate in teaching 270.000 kids leaving under poverty.

  1. Child poverty is an interesting subject because it happens everywhere in the world not just NZ. How would you address these issues? And what can people do to address this issue? I know right now, there is a lot of media awareness for this issue. But it doesn't eliminate it all together.

I think what you're doing is a really good topic. Like for example how the link you've posted about teachers spending money on food for hungry kids, instead of spending it on educational resources. Another point you brought up about the family tax credit, it's good you brought it up, you should emphasize that more.

  3. I think that with all of the recent things in the nz media about paying for low deciles school lunches, that this issue is in the forefront of everyone's mind, so very good timing ale ;) I also personally, totally agree that we need to be doing more to actually help children in poverty in our own country, I mean, we live in a wealthy society!! There is a famous quote "A society can be judged by how they treat their children". And I think our treatment of children is shocking.

Great topic. I am looking forward to reading it when you flesh it out, don't forget to include links. I hope you are feeling alright! x

  4. I like your topic, child poverty does need to be addressed, but what can we do to help them if their parents haven't been able to? This topic can have sooo many links to family well being. I feel sorry for these kids, especially because of an ad i saw on tv the other day. Sad again because of the schools that are being forced to shut down in Christchurch. Good luck with the rest.
